Persons with disabilities are still among the most vulnerable people in Malawi. This is despite various efforts of non-governmental organisations to transform their livelihood. Currently, it is noticeable that persons with disabilities are going through various plights ranging from access to information to self-economic development.
In access to information, persons with disabilities do hardly get any relevant information to a situation at hand. During disasters and pandemics, persons with disabilities are the last group to get relevant information due to lack of the information in accessible formats. This is also the same in education system. It is hard for a student with sensory impairment to have access of any related information in Education. In addition, information on self-economic development is also scarce. This is making it hard for them to actively participate in self-economic development activities.
Most significantly, the ABILIS seminar which occurred in Helsinki from 26th to 30th August 2024 and Malawi team participated, shaped the team knowledge in learning that in other countries, persons with disabilities are self economically empowered through the ABILIS programs.
This means that persons with disabilities in these countries are economically empowered. On the other hand, this means that their plights are lessened. Regarding this, it is our intention to ensure that with ABILIS Foundation program in the country, persons with disabilities in Malawi should be able to transform their livelihoods. They should be able to get any required information on time and be able to actively participate in various developmental activities. This will on one hand expose them to the nation while ensuring that disability is not inability.
